World-unique Shore Power Connection on Tern Fors

16 Nov 2023

On Tuesday, a globally unique connection of the product tanker Tern Fors to shore power was carried out in Gävle harbor. The vessel was connected for over three hours and, for the first time, conducted an unloading operation using shore side electricity as the power source.

Years of preparation from both the port and Terntank culminated in a central and globally unique milestone on Tuesday when Tern Fors connected to the newly built shore power connection in Gävle harbor. The vessel was connected for three hours and carried out an unloading operation, the most energy-consuming operation for a tanker, as the vessel's own pumps had to be operated. A total of 1,424 kWh was consumed during the operation.

"It was a completely magical feeling at the moment when we switched to shore power. It felt like we were experiencing something groundbreaking," says Robert Friborg, the chief engineer on board Tern Fors.

A large project that started in Gothenburg
Shore power for tankers is only available in one port in the USA for regular traffic, nowhere else in the world. Connecting tankers to shore power is complex due to a permanent risk of explosions when a tanker is docked in energy ports, as flammable products are pumped that can easily be ignited by electrical equipment. Gothenburg Port leads the Green Cable project with the aim of developing a new global standard for the electrical connection of tankers at the dock in a hazardous environment, together with classification societies, oil companies, shipping companies, the Swedish Transport Agency, and Gävle Port.

Solving challenges along the way
During the connection, the crew on board Tern Fors had direct contact with technicians from subcontractors in both Norway and China, while Gävle port had its electricians on site.

"We did encounter some challenges during the day, but we solved the issues that arose, made some adjustments, and then it went as planned," says Lennart Knutsson, the captain on board. Tern Fors tested the connection in Gävle in February of this year, but without connecting the power. Since then, various improvements and adjustments have been made, both to the onshore facility and on board.

"Now everything fell into place, and we were unloading completely without any auxiliary machines connected. If anything were to happen to the connection, we have batteries that kick in, ensuring that there is never a blackout on board," says Lennart Knutsson.

Evaluations are now awaited
The vessel connects the cable amidships. The connection points, both on board and ashore, are in specially adapted environments. On the dock, the cable is in a container with overpressure with air to prevent any gases from entering. The small connection house on board the vessel is then filled with nitrogen to ensure it is under 5 percent oxygen so that nothing can explode if a spark occurs.

Evaluations are now awaited from both the port and the shipping company before Tern Fors, and also the sister vessel Tern Island, can connect next time.

"The next time we do it, it will probably go much smoother; now we know more about how the connection should be made and that it works as intended. Next time, it will likely be much quicker," says Lennart Knutsson

Nor-Shipping Next Generation Ship Award goes to Terntank

07 Jun 2023

On Monday, Terntank received a receipt that the investment is the right way for the future, through the Next Generation Ship Award that was handed out during the Nor-Shipping fair in OsloThe shipping company took home the award in competition with three other projects.

It was in November 2022 that Terntank ordered three 15,000 dwt chemical, product and biofuel tankers from CMHI Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou, China. The ships will be equipped with fold-down sails and dual fuel machinery that enables the use of e-methanol, which, according to Terntank, makes the ships next-generation product tankers and forerunners when it comes to reaching the climate goals set by the IMO. The vessels, designed by Terntank and Kongsberg, will be ice-strengthened and equipped with Terntank's Hybrid Solution, which includes an electrical supply system, battery pack and shore power connection.

Intense competition
The Nor-Shipping Next Generation Ship Award is no small feat, given the intense competition of the entries. The selected vessels were assessed based on their energy efficiency, innovation, suitability and flexibility, technology use, safety and security, and environmental sustainability.

This year, three of the four entries spotlighted wind-assist technology, selected by an international jury that included Award president DNV group president and chief executive Remi Eriksen.

– We at Terntank are extremely proud of this award. There are many people who made this big project possible and we thank our customers NEOT and Neste, as well as the shipyard China Merchant Jinling with whom we previously built six ships and who have shown that they can meet our high demands on quality and delivery times, says Tryggve Möller who owns and runs Terntank together with Rigmor Möller, Annika Kristensson and John Sten.

An extension of the previous design
The ships of the new series will be tailored to carry a variety of liquid cargoes and will have 14 cargo tank segregations. On the two most recently delivered ships, Tern Island and Tern Fors, emissions of carbon dioxide were reduced by 40 percent. On new builds, carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by a further 8 percentage points through the system of assisting wind power.

– These new builds are an extension of our previous Avic and Hybrid Solution ships and where we now add sails and operation with methanol to further reduce emissions and thus successfully meet current and future requirements in the EU and IMO to contribute to the zero emissions target we set up, says Tryggve Möller.

The first will be delivered in spring 2025
The first of the three ships in the series will be delivered in March 2025 and will be chartered for NEOT. The two subsequent ones, chartered by Neste, will be delivered in the second half of 2025 and early 2026, respectively.

– We want to thank our employees in our offices, the on-board employees and the site team at the shipyard for their efforts, concludes Tryggve Möller.

The decade-long collaboration continues towards more sustainable shipping between neot and terntank

The long-term cooperation and a joint journey to develop the energy-efficient and low-emission supply chain of clean petroleum and bio products started already in 2013. North European Oil Trade (NEOT) has currently six of Terntank’s vessels in service. During the past ten years companies have together piloted the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied biogas (LBG) powered tankers in operation. NEOT was the first Finnish company to use fossil-free LBG in shipping in 2018. The pioneering of new innovative technologies continued with the hybrid battery system and on-shore power connection as the first tankers in the world in 2020. This Hybrid Solution® enables zero emission approach and minimises harmful pollution in ports located in urban areas. Terntank and NEOT have continuously developed Just-In-Time arrival of vessels to optimise their speed during the voyage to ensure the availability of berth when arriving a port.

Terntank has ordered new wind and methanol powered 15,000 dwt hybrid tankers with 14 cargo tank segregation in November 2022. NEOT will have the first of these newbuildings for the time charter. The vessel will be delivered in March 2025. The major steps towards more sustainable shipping will be taken with the new time-chartered vessel. In addition to the Hybrid Solution®, the vessel will be prepared for foldable sails for wind-assisted propulsion and dual-fuel engine, enabling the use of green methanol in the future. Green methanol is a low-carbon fuel made from either biomass or renewable electricity and captured carbon dioxide.

The Finnish energy service company Wega has supported the ten-year cooperation and innovated the future shipping together with Terntank and NEOT. Wega facilitated the charter agreement between the companies.

For NEOT it is extremely important to reduce the carbon footprint of our supply chain, and this has been possible with Terntank with whom we have together been front runners in achieving less emission causing cargo transportation by sea. We are very proud to work together with Terntank as our shipping partner and are highly impressed by the pioneering spirit of the company and how they safely operate the vessels. Also, thank you to the professional crew, who never hesitate to go the extra mile if needed. We are looking forward to a bright future and cooperation for many years to come. – Marc Scheller, Director of shipping and operations, NEOT.
